Before buying a travel eSIM or a new digital line, there’s one question to answer: does my phone support eSIM? The good news is that the vast majority of phones from the last few years do. This guide shows you how to get a definitive answer in 30 seconds, then gives an up-to-date brand-by-brand list of compatible devices, the regional exceptions to watch for, and what to do if your phone isn’t supported.

The 30-Second Definitive Check

Forget the lists for a moment — the most reliable method is to ask your phone directly. If the device is compatible, an option to add an eSIM appears in settings:

  • iPhone: if Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data → Add eSIM exists, your phone supports eSIM.
  • Android (Samsung): Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM.
  • Android (Pixel & others): Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Download eSIM / Add SIM.

A second method: type *#06# on your phone’s dialler. If an EID number appears on the screen, your device has an eSIM chip.

iPhones That Support eSIM

Apple has built eSIM into every iPhone since 2018. These models support eSIM:

  • iPhone XR, XS, XS Max
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd gen, 2020) and SE (3rd gen, 2022)
  • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
  • All models of the iPhone 14, 15 and 16 series

Important: iPhone 14 and later sold in the US are eSIM-only — there’s no physical SIM tray. By contrast, iPhones sold in mainland China generally use dual physical SIMs and don’t support eSIM.

Samsung Galaxy Models That Support eSIM

Samsung’s flagship and foldable models support eSIM:

  • Galaxy S20, S21, S22, S23, S24 and S25 series (including FE models)
  • Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra
  • Foldables: Galaxy Z Fold2/3/4/5/6 and Z Flip / Flip3/4/5/6
  • Some mid-range models (e.g. Galaxy A54, A55 — varies by region)

On Samsung, eSIM support can vary by region and carrier: the same model may ship with eSIM in some countries and physical-SIM-only in others. That’s why the 30-second check above matters especially on Samsung.

Google Pixel Models That Support eSIM

  • Pixel 3, 3 XL, 3a, 3a XL
  • Pixel 4, 4 XL, 4a, 4a 5G
  • Pixel 5, 5a
  • Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a
  • Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a
  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a
  • Pixel 9 series

Exception: some regional versions of the original Pixel 3 (e.g. those sold in Australia, Japan and Taiwan) didn’t support eSIM. Newer Pixels have no such limitation.

Other Brands

eSIM is no longer limited to Apple, Samsung and Google. Many recent models from the brands below also support it (confirm by model and region):

  • Motorola: Razr (2019, 5G, 2022/2023/2024 foldables), Edge series (Edge+, Edge 2021–2024).
  • Sony: Xperia 1 IV / 1 V / 1 VI, Xperia 5 IV / 5 V, Xperia 10 IV and later.
  • Oppo: Find X3 Pro, Find X5 / X5 Pro, Find N2 Flip and select Reno models.
  • Xiaomi: Xiaomi 12T Pro, 13 / 13 Pro, 13T / 13T Pro, 14 / 14 Pro (eSIM support on Xiaomi is quite region-dependent).
  • Huawei: models such as P40 / P40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro (note: newer Huawei devices lack Google services).
  • Honor: Magic4 Pro, Magic5 Pro, Magic6 Pro.
  • Nothing: Phone (1), (2), (2a), (3a).
  • Fairphone: Fairphone 4 and 5.

Devices Beyond Phones

eSIM isn’t just for phones — many tablets and smartwatches have it too:

  • Tablets: Cellular iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad models; some Samsung Galaxy Tab models.
  • Smartwatches: Apple Watch (Cellular versions), Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE, Google Pixel Watch.

Because travel eSIMs are usually data-focused, an eSIM-capable tablet can also get you online abroad with ease.

Watch Out: Regional and “China” Variants

The same model name doesn’t always mean the same hardware. The most common exceptions:

  • Mainland China iPhones: ship with dual physical SIMs instead of eSIM.
  • Regional versions of some Android flagships: the same model may be eSIM-enabled in one country and physical-SIM-only in another.
  • Grey-market / imported devices: if you’re unsure which regional version you have, always run the 30-second settings check.

In short: even if the brand and model match the list, your phone’s settings always have the final say.

What If My Phone Doesn’t Support eSIM?

If your device doesn’t support eSIM, you have a few options:

  • Stick with a physical SIM: a physical local or travel SIM still works for travel.
  • Use a second eSIM-capable device: connect with an eSIM tablet or spare phone and share the connection via hotspot.
  • eSIM on your next phone: when it’s time to upgrade, choosing an eSIM-capable model pays off greatly for future travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the easiest way to tell if my phone supports eSIM?

Look for an “Add eSIM / add mobile plan” option in settings, or type *#06# on the dialler and check for an EID number.

Can my eSIM phone use a physical SIM at the same time?

Yes — most eSIM-capable phones can keep one physical SIM and one or more eSIMs active at once.

My old phone shows no EID — what does that mean?

If there’s no EID and no eSIM option in settings, your device most likely doesn’t support eSIM and you’ll need to use a physical SIM.
